Local SEO: How to Get Your Business Found on Google in 2026

When someone in your area searches for what you do - "kickboxing classes near me", "loft boarding Leicestershire", "social media management Midlands" - do you show up? If not, you're losing enquiries to competitors who do.

Local SEO is how you make sure your business appears in Google searches and map results when nearby customers are looking for your services. And unlike paid ads, you don't pay for every click.

Here's a practical guide to local SEO for UK small businesses in 2026.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of improving your visibility in location-based searches. When someone searches "plumber near me" or "martial arts Nottingham", Google shows a mix of map results and organic listings. Local SEO helps you appear in both.

It's different from general SEO because it focuses specifically on your geographic area. For most UK small businesses, local SEO is more valuable than trying to rank nationally because your customers are nearby.

1. Claim and optimise your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single most important factor in local SEO. It's the box that appears on the right when someone searches your business name, and it's what shows up in map results.

Here's what to get right:

  • Claim and verify your listing. If you haven't done this, do it today. It's free.
  • Complete every section. Business name, address, phone number, website, hours, services, description - fill it all in.
  • Choose the right categories. Your primary category should be your main service. Add secondary categories for everything else you offer.
  • Add photos regularly. Businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to their website (Google's own data).
  • Post updates. Google lets you post updates, offers and events directly to your profile. Use it - it signals that your business is active.

2. Get your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google checks whether your business details are consistent across the internet - your website, social media, directories, review sites and more.

If your phone number is different on Yell.com than it is on your website, Google gets confused and may rank you lower. Make sure your NAP is identical everywhere.

3. Collect Google reviews (and respond to them)

Reviews are a major ranking factor for local SEO. The more positive reviews you have, the higher you're likely to appear in map results. But it's not just about quantity - Google also looks at how recent they are and whether you respond.

Tip: After completing a job or serving a customer, send them a direct link to leave a Google review. Make it as easy as possible. Even one new review per week makes a difference over time.

4. Use local keywords on your website

Your website should include the locations you serve and the services you offer. Not stuffed unnaturally, but woven into your content in a way that reads well.

For example, instead of just saying "We offer social media management", say "We offer social media management for businesses across Leicestershire, the Midlands and the wider UK." This helps Google understand where you operate.

Key places to include local keywords:

  • Page titles and meta descriptions
  • Headings (H1, H2)
  • Your homepage and service pages
  • Image alt text
  • Footer (your address and service area)

5. Build local citations and directory listings

Citations are mentions of your business on other websites - directories like Yell, Thomson Local, Yelp, industry-specific directories and local business listings. The more consistent citations you have, the more Google trusts that your business is legitimate and located where you say it is.

6. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly and fast

Most local searches happen on mobile phones. If your website is slow, hard to navigate or doesn't work properly on a phone, you'll lose visitors before they even enquire. Google also uses mobile-friendliness as a ranking factor.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Local SEO isn't instant. It typically takes 3-6 months to see meaningful improvements in rankings and enquiries. But the results compound over time - once you're ranking well locally, you get a steady stream of enquiries without paying for every click.

That's why local SEO works best alongside consistent social media and Facebook and Instagram ads - the ads bring leads now, the social media builds trust, and the SEO builds long-term visibility.
